Is the History True?
The other night I was watching a show on the history channel about the books that were rejected when the books of the bible were chosen. According to this show it was the bishops of the Constantinople area that were all gathered together to vote. Some more popular manuscripts like the Epistle of Barnabas and the Shepherd of Hermas something or other were rejected and less popular books like 2nd and 3rd John were voted in. Now when you learn about that topic from Baptists you hear about how holy men were led of God in choosing which books belonged and that the Catholics were wicked men burning Christians at the stake. How do you know whats really true? Whoever is in charge can twist history to say whatever they want (example - Nazi Germany) so how do we know we have the truth rather than a twisted version? You also have conflicting facts about the Reformation - did the Reformers preserve truth or did the Baptist remnant that hid out? Its just something that made me wonder when I heard it, but also something I've wondered in the past...

As to the original question,
As to the original question, I could get you a copy of something that will explain more about where and when this and that happened to the Bible if you like.
Officially, as accepted by the world, the catholics are the people to took care of the Bible. This is a common teaching, taking into account that many historical facts are being covered up to avoid scandals associated to particular races and creeds. (Australians are taught that aborigines were never cannibals, or never had a fight with 'whites'. Not true, yet that's what is taught, and is officially accepted.) This record is untrue.
By the way, facts are NEVER conflicting.
Well, if you are kinda wondering whether or not God is a liar, I suppose I shouldn't be wasting my time here!
Is the history true
Hi there! I just wanted to make two comments: I liked this entry. I have wondered the same sort of thing many times and have finally come to the conclusion that not much of any holy text can really be trusted. Actually, that was a bit of a relief since there's some really nasty stuff in the Bible along with the passages about loving your neighbor and everyone being your neighbor. :D Basically I feel like the Bible is a great resource to pick through and find some sensible and loving suggestions for living your life, but definitely can't be taken at face value.
My other comment is that I visited your avatar site and it was great. I found quite a few avatars I really liked. Thanks for posting them.

Yes, nasty stuff, like "the
Yes, nasty stuff, like "the soul that sinneth, it shall die." And, "For the wages of sin is death..."
I'll speak for myself here: I believe the Bible is the absolute Word of the Almighty God (as opposed to "any holy text").
But what do you base that
But what do you base that belief on?
The words of the LORD are
The words of the LORD are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times. Thou shalt keep them, O LORD, thou shalt preserve them from this generation for ever.
I base it on many facts, all of which have never been on television--I don't decide what I am going to believe because it is questioned on the television (as everything factual is--theories aren't: evolution being the best example).
Historically: the Bible is 100% prophetically accurate, one of the most-amazing is the record of Alexander the Great prophesied several hundred years before the rise of the Greek empire.
Geographically: a great question lies with regard to "a great world-wide flood", and many scientists have proved (Christian and otherwise) that there is solid evidence of such an occurrence. Another example is the tombs over in Israel are located and dated to precisely the record in the Bible. What about Jericho and many other cities that were destroyed by the Israelites--many of these have been found right where they should be as according to the record.
Spiritually: You might tell me that there is no such thing as druids, witches, and spirits: many people believe this, however it is not true. It is hard not to find a psychic these days that will happily consult the spirits for you so long as it is in their field of expertise. There are many such confirmed and re-confirmed stories about which establish a fact: there is a spirit world. This too is confirmed by the Bible.
I can go on and on and on. By personal belief is simple because of the fact that I believe that the Bible is not just another holy book, but the actual written Word of God. Why I believe that? The God's own Holy Spirit convicts men of sin, and their need for a Saviour--this is the only Book that tells about the true nature of this Spirit that works wonders in the hearts and lives of men--no false religion comes even close to prayers being answered, lives being changed, and a true assurance that God is who He says He is.
